I want to search something like every people someone born in 1875 and died at 1946

so i should search Category:1875 births and Category:1946 deaths at the same time.

How can i make this work? or is this kind of function that wikipedia yet to support? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.32.95.193 (talk) 10:45, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not really a structured database, but our sister project, Wikidata is, and most article subjects in Wikipedia are represented by objects in Wikidata. It's quite easy to use Wikidata for this type of query. I do it so rarely that I must re-learn the details each time, but its very quick (five minutes?) and easy to re-learn. -Arch dude (talk) 11:27, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to add topic

[edit]

I want to add a new topic into a wikipedia article GSKN81 (talk) 05:47, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, GSKN81. It's a little hard to understand, but I think that what you are saying is that you want to add a translation of Pager#Attack on Hezbollah to an article in another language Wikipedia; and from your global contributions, I'm guessing that it is to the article bn:পেজার.
As far as English Wikipedia is concerned, you may do this: the only requirement is that you attribute the source when you make your edit - either in your edit summary, or on the Bengali article's talk page. See WP:TFOLWP.
What you need to do in the Bengali article, and why you may have difficulty, we can't help you with: you'll need to ask at Bn Wikipedia - try bn:উইকিপিডিয়া:সাহায্যকেন্দ্র. ColinFine (talk) 14:43, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Linking to a foreign-language Wikipedia

Glad you liked it, it's a gem of a script that removes the hassle with ill. Best, Sam Sailor 18:14, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sam Sailor, it's excellently named, too. Meanwhile, I don't remember how I first encountered illm, but anyway I encountered it before I first encountered ill. Since the former has always worked well for me, I've never bothered to investigate the latter. It's only today that I read about the merge for the first time. -- Hoary (talk) 22:46, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wise man. I recall reading about both, but that only served to making me, whenever I ever so rarely wanted to make an interlanguage link, confused about which template used what syntax. Good call merging them. And the name is splendid. Sam Sailor 23:12, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Adding my traditional caveat that interwiki links are hidden behind a long press on mobile when using ill, and the URL displayed may percent encode non-ASCII glyphs depending on browser. So for interwiki links to languages not using the Latin character set, the name of the target article will be illegible for a subset of readers unless they choose to click through to a different website.
For proper names and toponyms transliterated lossily, the target article title may be valuable information for readers, so it is sometimes appropriate to include a plaintext rendering in the native script adjacent to the ill transclusion. Place names in Valencia, Eastern Spain

[edit]

I just wanted to check whether we can use Valencian exonyms (see Corpus Toponímic Valencià) in the Spanish-speaking regions of the Valencian Community. I think we could since Valencian is official in the whole Valencian territory, and the same happens with Spanish in the Valencian-speaking regions of the Valencian Community (i.e. we use both forms despite official local denominations, see Benissa in Valencian and Benisa in Spanish). What's the recommendation by admins and Wikipedia? — Jɑuмe (dis-me) 00:44, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I'm thhat user (as you can see half of my IP matches) but where I am now it's just mobile Internet that keeps changing the IP on a daily basis.
I would say there a very few examples like Torrevieja where this doesn't apply. Valencian has never been spoken in Torrevieja and no one says Torrevella except for some Catalan books.
For Spanish names in Valencian-predominant areas, we know Spanish is still used and many English or foreign sources also use the Spanish name, even if it's not official. Calpe or Jávea are more common from miles away in any language (other than Valencian/Catalan) than Calp or Xàbia despite these last ones being official.
As you saw I didn't try to delete anything from your recent changes including the duality of Valencian names. I am from Valencia too and I like that detailed info. But for Torrevieja honestly, I would say it's an exception. As Valencian has never been spoken there. 84.125.73.65 (talk) 10:11, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Torrevieja is in the Valencian Community (where Valencian is official), the same than Benissa is in Spain (where Spanish is official), therefore both towns could use an exonym in the correspondent language. The name Torrevella is used by other Valencians, similar to Benisa is used by those who use Spanish. It's a way or matter of respect to both linguistic realities in the Valencian Community. See also Alghero in Italy where Catalan is the local language, Sardinian regional and Italian national. — Jɑuмe (dis-me) 11:06, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I oppose to this change. The AVL or the IEC have invented these names. Orihuela was once historically Valencian speaking, Torrevieja was never. No one says "Torrevella" except for pro-catalanism Catalonian newspapers and the AVL, you won't find an official source saying that.
Torrevieja was settled only with Spanish-speaking people and it has been like that since the town started to exist. I have left both "Oriola" and "Torrevella" terms as a good willing gesture but they can never be in the infobox nor either in bold text. Even if Valencian is official in the entire Valencian Community, it's NOT in Torrevieja or Orihuela (amongst other places) as public workers here don't require to speak Valencian as in Valencia, for example.
The difference with Valencian speaking towns is that people also speak Spanish there. But in Spanish speaking towns (especially around Murcia) no one speaks Valencian. It's not even mandatory at schools. I'm a Vega Bajense so I know how it is. Vega Bajense (talk) 11:22, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"mobile Internet that keeps changing the IP". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:39, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Vega Bajense, those names have not been invented by the AVL, they exist because Valencian is official in all the Valencian Community and the local people in non-traditional Valencian speaking areas have the right and choice to learn Valencian. As I said it's a matter of respect to keep those names, and the same occurs in traditional Valencian-speaking areas with Spanish (like Benissa). Why can't the Valencian name go in the infobox on the "other_name" category (and not in native_name)? — Jɑuмe (dis-me) 19:38, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
People have the right to choose any language they want. True. The difference in Vega Baja del Segura is that Valencian has the same value as French, German or Chinese. It's not even a mandatory school subject, unlike English. This happens in all of the Vega Baja except for Guardamar del Segura, where Valencian is co-official.
I have left your edits on Orihuela just without the bolding and without including it in the infobox (if you want to, wait for a consensus as that wasn't there) I have left your edits in the page Vega Baja except for that biased map made by a Wikipedia Commons user who claims himself as a "Catalan Nationalist" in his own Wikipedia profile.
But about the Torrevieja issue I have deleted it all as per WP:BRD and let's reach a consensus first. I'm from La Vega Baja. I know my history and what my people think. To let you know, many people here don't even like to be Valencian. There are political movements and associations to make La Vega Baja even another separate province in Spain, even outside from Alicante.
This is just random info but I know Orihuela used to he Valencian speaking. Torrevieja was settled only by Spanish-speaking people (including many Murcian fishermen, actually) and has never been bilingual. You can even go there and check that the local people have almost the same accent as eastern people from Murcia.
Do you want to include "Torrevella" which is a term locally hated by the people of Torrevieja? (I can find even local newspaper sources for this) okay, let's reach a consensus. But don't put it again as that wasn't the stable version of the page. I would agree with it only if you put it unbolded on the lead and with the IPA name in a small note. But putting "Torrevella" there like it's a relevant or a local/regional name... that doesn't make any sense. Vega Bajense (talk) 22:04, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are mixing facts, English, French and German are not official in the Valencian Community, whereas Valencian is. Why would it be hated a language in Torrevieja? That doesn't sound right. Anyway, it doesn't make much difference having it in bold or not. But the IPA should be in the lead as the names aren't too long just like as other Valencian towns display it. It also should be included the Valencian exonym in the infobox as other_name. — Jɑuмe (dis-me) 01:15, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you have an improvement to suggest to an article, the best place to make your suggestion is the talk page of the article (here, Talk:Sonny Dykes). Your argument will be more persuasive if you can point to a reliable published source that contains the information - otherwise anybody who decides to implement your suggestion will need to go looking for a source themselves. Photo citation corrected by me, then changed back to incorrect caption by someone afterwards for Love (band).

[edit]

I changed the citation of the picture to correctly show Arthur Lee on the left side of the photo in the Wiki page of Love (band). And someone reverted the caption back, incorrectly showing Arthur Lee at photo top.  How does one address this issue satisfactorily so it describes the correct order of personnel? https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Love_%28band%29&oldid=prev&diff=1218442654 Packzap (talk) 20:37, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Packzap It appears that you and the other editor disagree. The next thing is to talk to them at Talk:Love (band). TSventon (talk) 21:32, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Packzap: Wikipedia content is based on reliable published sources. In this case the original version at File:LOVE60s.png#filehistory actually had names in the image. Here is a better version. It's still hard to read the precise names but it has to be John Echols at the left and Arthur Lee at top. That's what someone reverted back to [2] after you had changed away from it. You will need an excellent source if you claim an official promotional image for the band mixed up their names. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:37, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PrimeHunter, the positions of the names on that promotional photo are ambiguous. One thing that is certain is that Arthur Lee was African-American. Looking that that photo, it is pretty clear which of the five men was African-American. I think that Packzap has a point. Cullen328 (talk) 00:22, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well it's ridiculous to assume one scant promotional image by the record company is labeled correctly when all other sources show the person on the left is Arthur Lee, and thus this photo is labeled incorrectly. Just see the wiki (and photo) for Arthur Lee himself, or the thousands of images of the man from reputable sources like Getty images, https://www.gettyimages.com/photos/arthur-lee, and it's plain as day that the musician Arthur Lee (of African descent) is not captioned correctly in the Wiki photo of the band he lead - Love. I don't understand why this is so difficult to corroborate? Packzap (talk) 00:39, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cullen328: The only ambiguous position is the top name but when the other four are clear, the top name has to refer to the top person. The bottom name John Echols couldn't possibly be meant for the top person. They are both part African-American. In [3] Johnny Echols says "Arthur and I were young and headstrong, having been raised in bi-racial families". The image [4] looks like a photomontage of different photos in different light conditions with the backgrounds cut out. @Packzap: See what happens if Johnny Echols is added to your search: https://www.gettyimages.com/photos/arthur-lee-johnny-echols. They look rather similar to me when they are actually in the same photo, but Johnny Echols looks more like the bottom person. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:24, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Small Text on Mobile Device with Desktop Mode and Web Browser

[edit]

Earlier today, when I am logged in using my alternate mobile account (User:McClenon mobile), using desktop mode with Google Chrome, my display has gone to small type that is not easy to read (with a good prescription for computer vision glasses) and is sometimes difficult to touch in the right place. What may have been accidentally set, and how can I restore normal size text? I looked at Preferences, and don't see anything that sets the screen small. I have tried Mobile View, and that doesn't help. It is still small, and besides I am in Mobile View, which I don't like (just as User:Cullen328 doesn't like it). I tried logging on from my desktop computer as McClenon mobile, and I am seeing a normal display for the full-size monitor that I use with my real desktop computer. If I read the news online, using Google Chrome, it displays the news pages in normal size. What would I have accidentally set that causes small type to display on a mobile device using Desktop View and a web browser? (When I am using my mobile device to view and edit Wikipedia, I always use Desktop View and a web browser.) Robert McClenon (talk) 21:40, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Robert McClenon: It might be the appearance settings on the right-hand side of the screen; if you've collapsed it in the past, the menu should be hiding behind the icon at the top of the page. There are some radio buttons that let you adjust the size of text. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:10, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, User:Tenryuu - I have found the glasses icon at the top of the screen when I am logged out, so I can control the size of the type if I edit logged out, but I don't want to edit logged out. I don't see the glasses icon at the top of the page when I am logged in as User:McClenon mobile. Do you or anyone have a clue as to how I can get that icon to display? Robert McClenon (talk) 05:58, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Robert McClenon, what skin is McClenon mobile using in Special:Preferences? I switched to desktop view just now in another tab, and I see the glasses icon in Vector 2022. I don't know whether it's present in all skins. It's possible you may also have to toggle on "Enable responsive mode" and/or "Enable limited width mode" for your mobile account under Appearance → Skin preferences (I have these turned on – because I don't have a computer anymore and use my phone for everything – unsure if they have any effect on visibility of the text size switchy glasses). Folly Mox (talk) 07:29, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:Folly Mox Thank you. Just changing to Vector 2022 makes most of the text a normal size. More later, maybe. McClenon mobile (talk) 21:50, 13 October 2024 (UTC)I[reply]
I was using Monobook both from my mobile account on a phone, and from this primary account on my desktop or laptop computers. When I changed the skin on my phone, it solved most of the font size problem. There are a few minor annoyances about labels that are small, but I am not in a hurry to solve them. For now, changing the skin for the mobile account solves the problem. Thank you. Robert McClenon (talk) 03:59, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a consensus on how to format possessive links?

[edit]

Is it preferred to format possessive links like The King's or The King's?

I've read through the MOS, the full linking page, and several help pages. None of them seem to mention the format, and I've definitely seen both used on major pages.

Stormdew (talk) 00:36, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely use The King's – not for style reasons, but for technical reasons. The first one links to the article titled King, and the second to King's. As it happens, King's is a redirect to the disambiguation page Kings, but in general it won't exist; e.g., Wikipedian and Wikipedian's. jlwoodwa (talk) 02:26, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I meant to pipe that example—oops. :/ Stormdew (talk) 21:49, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Another possibility is The King's, linking to "King" but link-coloring "King's". But I'd almost always prefer The King's. Maproom (talk) 06:41, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Stormdew There is discussion of this at Help:Link. One consideration (mentioned on that page) is that Batman's renders as Batman's, where the apostrophe s isn't in blue. Piping is needed if you want Batman's and you do have to beware that without the pipe the target page may not be what you want, as in the King example. • Peter Middleton "met his granddaughter's fiancé", who (later, of course) "attended his funeral"
• Olive Middleton "attended society balls" at the home of a "daughter of her second cousin"
• The service at the funeral" of J.W. Middleton "was read by the [...] vicar of St Chad's Church where his son Arthur Middleton had been a regular attender and had his own funeral service in 1907"
For mysterious persons of considerable public interest (such as Shakespeare or Pynchon), yes. But here this looks to me like mere barrel-scraping for something to say. -- Hoary (talk) 23:41, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Where to discuss category loop

[edit]

I noticed a category loop. Specifically, Category:PrimatologyCategory:Biological anthropologyCategory:Human biologyCategory:HumansCategory:HomininaCategory:HomininiCategory:HomininaeCategory:HominidaeCategory:ApesCategory:Primate taxonomyCategory:Primate taxaCategory:PrimatesCategory:PrimatologyCategory:Biological anthropology ⊂…, which has length twelve. (There are also overlapping loops, such as one using Category:Biological anthropologyCategory:AnthropologyCategory:Humans instead of Category:Biological anthropologyCategory:Human biologyCategory:Humans.) Because I recall that category loops are discouraged, I figured that I would bring it up in an appropriate talk page in order to create a discussion about how to fix it. (I personally favor changing Category:Primate taxonomyCategory:Primate taxa to Category:Primate taxonomyCategory:Primate taxa, but I can see other users preferring alternatives.) My first idea was Portal talk:Biology, but I got a message saying that I shouldn't post there because pages in the Portal talk namespace are not watched by many people. Multiple references to the same source, differing in the inclusion of quotes

[edit]

I sometimes have, within the same article, multiple references to the same source, differing in the inclusion of quotes. Is there a way to do this without repeating the complete reference? I recall a recent notification about a new referencing tool, designed to support multiple references to the same source, with variations. What is the best way to handle a major restructuring of an article?

[edit]

I'm planning to restructure an article. This will involve multiple editing steps, during which the article will be a mess. What is the best way to do this? Should I copy the article to Draft space, do the restructuring, then select the text of the Draft, copy it, and paste it into the live article, replacing the existing text? A disadvantage of that approach is that the individual editing steps would not be visible in the article's history. Is there a better way? Thanks! Misha Wolf (talk) 11:32, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can use In use for big editing sessions and Under construction in between sessions, but don't worry too much about article history if you're the only one making the edits. Having a few big edits in the article history has advantages as well as disadvantages, Misha Wolf, so break up the edits in a way that makes sense to you, whether that's several smaller edits or fewer bigger ones. Search for malformed redirects

[edit]

Is there any way to find pages that consist of redirects that are broken? I don't care about redirects with redlink targets; I'm interested in mainspace pages that are meant to be redirects but have broken code. Proper redirects consist of this code:

#REDIRECT Target

and I'm interested in something like

REDIRECT Target
#REIRECT Target

Not just these two variations, but anything of the sort. I'm guessing that a single search wouldn't work (too many possible permutations), but I don't know how to search for any version of these, since I don't know if Special:Search will find broken code like this. Nyttend (talk) 20:34, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Nyttend: Working redirect pages cannot be results in Wikipedia searches but any failed attempt at a redirect will be a normal page with searchable content. Apparently all three of these trees are the largest in the world. Not only that, but The Great Banyan and Thimmamma Marrimanu use exactly the same sources to show that [i]t was recorded as the largest tree specimen in the world in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1989.[1][2][3] My confusion is compounded by the myriad of different ways in which a tree can be the "largest", but according to List of superlative trees, both Thimmamma Marrimanu and General Sherman are top of the tree (sorry) in respective categories, but The Great Banyan doesn't get a mention.

Of the attached sources one is on Archive.org - which is currently down and inaccessible - and the other two are dead links. A Google search suggests that General Sherman is generally considered to be the "largest tree", (especially by Guinness) with Thimmamma Marrimanu getting an honourable mention, and The Great Banyan getting no mention at all. I'm tempted to remove the claim from Great Banyan, and tag the others for dead links and better source needed, but thought I'd ask here first for opinions. Chaheel Riens (talk) 08:07, 13 October 2024 (UTC) Chaheel Riens (talk) 08:07, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean by largest? The Great Banyan covers the widest ground area but is not very tall. Shantavira|feed me 08:32, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And so you see the problem. It's not what I mean by "largest", but what does Wikipedia mean by largest, and that seems a very broad definition. However, my main point is - I think - still valid in that The Great Banyan and Thimmamma Marrimanu cannot both have been declared the largest tree specimen in the world in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1989 - so which is it? Chaheel Riens (talk) 09:08, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
From Guinness Book of Records 2022 (Sept. 2021), Guinness World Records Limited, ISBN 978-1913484118, pp. 44-45:
"Largest canopy on a tree: Banyans spread by sending down cord-like appendages from horizontal branches that take root and become new trunks, so one tree can resemble an entire grove. Located in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, India, Thimmamma Marrimanu is an Indian banyan (Ficus benghalensis) whose multiple crowns merge to form a 2.19-ha (5.41-acre) canopy – equivalent to three soccer fields."
"Widest crown on a tree (single trunk): Chamchuri is a rain tree (Albizia saman) with a crown diameter of 60.4 m (198 ft 1 in), located on the Thai Army cavalry grounds near Kanchanaburi, Thailand. As of 2018, its trunk girth was 9.15 m (30 ft) and the tree stood 17.6 m (57 ft 8 in) tall."
"Giants of the forest: A coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) nicknamed Hyperion had grown to 116.07 m (380 ft 9 in) by 2019, making it currently the world’s tallest tree. It was discovered on 25 Aug 2006 inside Redwood National Park in California, USA. To Hyperion’s left [illustration] is Centurion, the tallest hardwood tree at 99.82 m (327 ft 5 in); the mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans) was measured in 2014 in Tasmania, Australia. Alongside Centurion is a giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) named General Sherman, currently the largest tree by volume at 1,591 m 3 (56,186 cu ft). It stands 83.6 m (274 ft) in Sequoia National Park, also in California."

It all depends on what you mean by 'biggest', as Prof. C.E.M. Joad used to say. MinorProphet (talk) 12:13, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Chaheel Riens: I think we need to go back to first principles here. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia whose mission is to provide accurate information to the general reader based on cited reliable sources. When sources disagree, we are supposed to explain the discrepancy. We are not supposed to take sides. So how can we apply these principles in this complicated situation that spans multiple articles? Here is my reccomendation: In each affected article, add a qualifier in parentheses, e.g. (largest canopy), or (single trunk), or (by mass). Also add a footnote. [a] -Arch dude (talk) 15:56, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

With all due respect, people are missing my point that the same three references are being used to claim that both The Great Banyan and Thimmamma Marrimanu were recorded as the largest tree specimen in the world in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1989. All three sources are - for different reasons - unavailable, so what should be done about that? Clearly both cannot be the world record holder, but I'm at a loss as to how to validate either of the claims. They're both Banyan trees, so it seems likely that the claim is for the same type of "largest". Chaheel Riens (talk) 16:05, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Chaheel Riens: If you cannot get a copy of the reference (e.g., via an interlibrary loan), then you may be able to ask another editor to look it up for you. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request. If the source is self-contradictory, then note the discrepancy in both articles. -Arch dude (talk) 17:54, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alternatively, @Chaheel Riens:, in all the relevant articles, remove the texts and (outdated and unretrievable) citations that you have noticed are inadequate, and replace them with the relevant information from Guinness Book of Records 2022 that MinorProphet has retrieved above, citing it to that more recent work. We are not obligated to retain cites to older, poorer sources (which will anyway be preserved in the page histories) when newer and better ones have become available. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.6.86.81 (talk) 20:52, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have tried every email address I can think of but, back then, emails weren't required so it may not be linked to one. Is there any way I can recover this? I have uploaded pictures of myself from that account (and prove it is me with ID). I own cavebear42.com and can show that I am the true "cavebear42". Hello. When I go to User:Cavebear42, it does not offer me "email this user" in the "Tools" list. This means, I believe, that that account does not have an email attached. Unfortunately, if you have lost the password, then there is no way to recover the account.
All you can do is to create a new account - you can edit both user pages to explain the one is the successor of the other. ColinFine (talk) 21:25, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

RevolutionaryPatriot Do you have a particular need for it to appear in search results quickly? 331dot (talk) 15:13, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that info -- didn't know that even after years of working here. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 01:24, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to create a list of subpages belonging to a category's articles' talk pages

[edit]

I've been trying to get WP:PetScan to create a list of subpages belonging to a group of talk pages, but it hasn't been very easy for some reason. Say you have Category:American football linebackers; I want PetScan to generate a list of talk page subpages belonging to the articles in the category (e.g., archive subpages). Is this even doable? Thanks in advance. Nythar (💬-🍀) 02:57, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking into this problem and I think the crux is that the intersection needs to be on categories that are on the Talk pages. There is not a way I can see to retrieve a page set and bootstrap to the page talk pages. At least using this tool. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 01:18, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll state an obvious secondary approach and that is to pull the full page list then process it to create new Talk-page wikilinks. This could be done using a spreadsheet program or any number of scripting languages (e.g. Perl, which I'm partial to). --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 01:22, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Broken user page

[edit]

Hello. For some reason, my user page is combining a heading with my Babel. Could someone check out my user page and tell me what the problem is? MacaroniPizzaHotDog (talk) 03:10, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MacaroniPizzaHotDog: Hi MacaroniPizzaHotDog! It was because the Userboxbottom template wasn't on its own line. I fixed it for you here. cyberdog958Talk 05:15, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Possible vandal

[edit]

Hi, There is this account @DrunkenJoe possibly an alternative account that keeps editing Al-Arqam related articles (Al-Arqam & Global Ikhwan child abuse scandal.) Well the problem here is that the account keeps rewriting the articles and in the process deletes almost all of the critical information, for example Al-Arqam which was rated C class is now half of the original length. He also keeps trying to reword Global Ikhwan child abuse scandal which I don't mind if its helping but the account reworded it literally like a news portal and deleted critical information. Can this possibly be considered vandalism? N niyaz (talk) 08:43, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That doesn't sound like vandalism (which is editing intended to damage Wikipedia), but somebody with a strong opinion which disagrees with yours (I know nothing about the subject, so I have no opinion on who is right or wrong).
There has not so far been any discussion on Talk: Global Ikhwan child abuse scandal, which is where discussion should begin: see WP:BRD. If you cannot reach consensus, then WP:DR tells you the next steps.
In the history of the two articles I see a lot of edits by @DrunkenJoe, and a smaller number by you. I do not see any edit warring, which often happens where there is strong disagreement. Please make sure that it stays that way. ColinFine (talk) 11:01, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine Sure, maybe @DrunkenJoe did a 'lot' of edits but he never added any information to the pages, instead he just removes all the good information and rewords the articles. Removing information contributed by other people can be some sort of vandalism right? I was the sole contributor of Global Ikhwan child abuse scandal before this, and now he's trying to revamp the page cluelessly and breaking all the formats. N niyaz (talk) 11:27, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@N niyaz One reason the Al-Arqam article has shrunk is that the child abuse part has been spun out and a Main template added to one section. As Colin said, the way forward is to engage on the Talk page of one or both of these articles. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:10, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull What was removed in Al-Arqam wasn't even related to the child abuse scandal, it was talking about how the cult operated and those sorts of things. N niyaz (talk) 11:22, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Again, @N niyaz, don't tell us here, start a calm reasoned discussion on one of those talk pages, and try to reach consensus. Even if you think the other editor is completely wrong, assume good faith is a core policy of Wikipedia. ColinFine (talk) 11:38, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to tell him at his talk page but he's unresponsive. N niyaz (talk) 12:18, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @N niyaz. Reaching consensus usually doesn't start by "telling" but by listening. If you start from "I am right and you are wrong", then you are not collaborating, you are trying to control. That's not how Wikipedia works. ColinFine (talk) 16:17, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Edits for a page.

[edit]

Hey I have joined a organization and the asked me to miantain their wikipedia page, I have created the content with adhering to wikipedia policies, but the reference and citation I used was from the company own website, some blogs on some sites are the enough or whould I add some different references and citations?, I also want to add some Images, but what images should I use? Ateeb Ali Syed (talk) 14:41, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ateeb Ali Syed First, you must make a conflict of interest disclosure. If you are employed by the organization or they compensate you in any manner(it doesn't have to be money) the Terms of use require a paid editing disclosure from you.
Instead of thinking about it as "their Wikipedia page", think of it as a Wikipedia article about them. This may adjust your mindset a bit. Your organization has no special rights to the article about it, though its input is welcome. If the article already exists, you should make an edit request on the article talk page(there is an edit request wizard to facilitate that, if needed) detailing changes you feel are needed. If you want to write a new article, you should use the Article Wizard. 331dot (talk) 14:50, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can in some circumstances cite the organisation's website or blog, but only for certain things (a new CEO, a change of address; but note extraordinary claims like sales figures or awards). For images, WP:IfSMC covers the main points, albeit it has a social media focus. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:40, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Movies crew credits

[edit]

I am currently editing and improving articles about old Iranian movies on Persian Wikipedia. One of the sections I’ve added is the production crew, including assistants, stage designers, makeup artists, and other technical staff. Is it against Wikipedia’s policies to include less prominent crew members in these pages? I’ve noticed that many articles don’t include this section, but I believe a short production crew list could be useful, especially for shorter articles that may not have much content. usually the main reference in these article are opening and closing credits and amybe some of those people are not wellknown. Thanks Mohsen Bagheri (talk) 22:10, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The English Language Wikipedia and the Persian Wikipedia are two separate projects: neither has any jurisdiction over the other, and each has its own consensus-generated rules and procedures, which are bound to differ in many details, so generally no-one here can give such advice relevant to the Persian Wikipedia.
It's possible that someone reading this query will be bilingual in English and Farsi, conversant with that Wikipedia's rules, and will respond here, but it's far from certain. (Check back here in a day or three, just in case.) You might do better asking on the Persian Wikipedia itself, at its own equivalent to this Helpdesk (if any). Sorry not to be of more help. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.6.86.81 (talk) 06:00, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

English Grammar

[edit]

Using a plural pronoun to refer to a singular person, is this to be politically correct or to anger people who use English as it is meant to be written? KevBuju (talk) 22:22, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mina Kolb - Actress.

[edit]

Looking for any information on actress, Mina Kolb. There is nothing on Wikipedia about her. Can someone who knows her or knows of her please add info. Is she still alive? If not, when did she pass? I find no information online anywhere about her passing? Oshinsd (talk) 00:00, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not obligated to have an article for every somewhat famous person. Even if there is a Wikipedia article about her, it can only get its information from reliable published sources rather than people who personally knows this person. You should direct your search efforts elsewhere. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 02:46, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
When archive.org recovers from vandalism, perhaps you, Oshinsd, will be able to find something about her in a book, magazine or something that's available there. -- Hoary (talk) 04:36, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
